Camping Anyone?

July 24, 2019 by Russell Fougere

Getting away for that summer camping trip is something most New Brunswicker’s take for granted. For many living with mobility impairments, camping is not an activity they consider, but this is changing as many parks are making facilities more accessible.

For today’s #TuesdayTangoTip, we highlight a few places in or near to NB that promote having accessible places to go camping, and share an article that has some tips for accessible camping.

NB Provincial Parks – Sugarloaf, Mactaquac and New River Beach Provincial parks all have wheelchair accessible structured tents, which come equipped with rustic beds, a roof, electricity, lights, and located close to washroom facilities. They have a great website for booking, which allows you to search for accessible accommodations: https://parcsnbparks.ca/Home.aspx

Fundy National Park, and Kouchibouguac National Park in NB, as well as Kejimkujik in NS all have accessible campsites, meaning that they should be flat and close to washroom facilities. Although it is not listed online, I am told Fundy also has accessible Yurts, so be sure to ask about those.

Both Cavendish Beach and Stanhope Beach National Parks in nearby PEI have accessible oTENTiks (basically a small cabin/glamorous tent). Pictures of Cavendish Beach oTENTiks are shown below. National Park accommodations can also be booked online: https://reservation.pc.gc.ca/Home.aspx

Lastly, Whycocomagh Provincial Park, in Cape Breton NS offers accessible Yurts (fancy permanent tents) equipped with beds. These can be booked here: https://novascotia.goingtocamp.com/Home.aspx

Be sure to take advantage of these great camping options in our area and enjoy what our local parks have to offer.

Happy camping!

We often hear about the shortage of beds in special care homes and hospitals, and how governments are trying to find ways to manage the care of our aging population. One of the best ways to do this is to keep people living independently in their homes. For our #tuesdaytangotip we highlight some products that should be considered in the home to PREVENT a fall before it happens.
